Happy New Year! Again, what a crazy month. Both my stock portfolio and my cryptocurrency portfolio did well this month. Crypto has outperformed without a doubt. I am very excited about the crazy rollercoaster that 2021 will be. Let’s take a look at my portfolio update for December 2020.
Don’t forget that you can always find an up-to-date overview of all the ‘numbers’ in my portfolio on the My Portfolio page.
Portfolio overview
My stock portfolio is performing as it should. Slow and steady gains. I like to see this as a marathon. I don’t need to get rich quick. Just adding the €1000 every month and I should see a great return in the long term future. I am very happy with how this portfolio is performing.
Naturally, cryptocurrencies are a totally different story. Apparently, last month wasn’t crazy enough by itself. December was at least equally as good. We saw more than decent gains here again. Honestly, I still feel like we have a lot of room to grow. This is my own opinion though. I can not predict the future but I am still a Bitcoin buyer at this point!
Monthly Cash-flow
My monthly cash-flow is still the same this month. Even though December is always an expensive month because of several birthdays and Christmas gifts as well as insurance bills, I still managed to save a bit more than planned. €2000 instead of €1800. This is largely because of the end of year bonus.
Portfolio Allocation
- Cash: Saved €900
- Stocks: Invested €1000 – €441.80 appreciation
- Crypto: Invested €100 – €5079.42 appreciation (!!)
A couple of months ago I thought reaching €50.000 net worth in 2020 would be very difficult. The crypto-gods have decided otherwise. I just shattered the €50k milestone which is just ridiculous. At this point, I should reach €100.000 by the end of 2022. This foresight does not take market fluctuations into account. This goal could be reached sooner or later. This being said, I am very excited about that moment.
My judgment could be flawed but I do feel that €50-60k is still not ‘a lot’ of money. I do think differently about €100.000. What are your thoughts?
I have more value in cryptocurrencies than I do have in stocks as of this moment. This is something I am not a big fan of but It is just outperforming my other assets. I guess this is a ‘good’ problem to have though.
Last month my portfolio appreciated by around €5000. I didn’t think this month could possibly be better. I guess that I really have no idea what markets can do. This month was even better! Investing really pays off, nothing is better than letting your money work for you!
Overview
I really hope your month was as good as mine was! This was my portfolio update for December of 2020. I am very excited about what 2021 has in store for us. I wish you all a very happy and healthy new year! If you have any further questions about my portfolio or about investing in general, please don’t hesitate to ask!
What should I put in the ‘invested’ column when I have 0€ invested in bitcoin? I put in €1, but then I get like 1 million percent change 😄
Hi Vincent,
Funny that you ask this. I have actually been thinking about this as well 😄. I would probably remove the invested column as well as the percentage change column. Indeed, in your case, they don’t really have much meaning. ‘Luxury problems’!
Kind regards,
Michiel
Ah, that simple 😂
Let me know if you have a better solution 😂
I don’t, this is perfect, just hadn’t thought of it myself
Are you never “afraid” having so much money (and accumulating) in only 2 /3 ETFs?
Hi Sarah,
Not at all! These 2-3 ETFs make sure I am invested in hundreds even thousands of companies at the same time. The fact that they are accumulating ensures that I don’t pay taxes when I don’t have to! The company that provides the ETFs (BlackRock) is also one of the most reputable companies out there!
Why would you think I would be afraid / what do you see as a possible risk?
Kind regards,
Michiel
I am not sure. The ETF as such brings some diversification (a lot of companies are included in the ETF), but I was more thinking in the direction of: what if something happens with the ETF? If it stops or don’t know what can happen 🙂 IWDA and EMIM are the best for Belgians, but maybe I would diversify my portfolio with more ETFs? Maybe that is just
irrational 🙂
In theory, an ETF can be discontinued. This is very unlikely for ETFs as big as IWDA and EMIM. In such a scenario you should receive cash equal to the share you own as the investments within the ETF would be sold for cash. But again, the chance of that happening for IWDA and EMIM is probably close to zero. 🙂
